Fixing Windows 8 Untrusted Certificate Authority Problems

To fix the Windows 8 Untrusted Certificate Authority error message when attempting smart card login, perform the following steps:

Download the following Certificates into a common folder:

     Certificate Icon HHS Domain Device Root CA (expires 6/25/2027)
     Certificate Icon NIH-DEVICE-SUBCA (expires 5/2/2019)
     Certificate Icon HHS-FPKI-Intermediate-CA-E1 (expires 5/9/2019)
     Certificate Icon HHS-SSP-CA-B7 (expires 7/6/2017)

 

Install the downloaded certificates into the local NTAUTH Store, by executing the following commands:

Note: Execute these commands in a command window running in the same folder as the downloaded certificates.

 

     certutil -enterprise -addstore NTAuth HHSDeviceRoot.cer
     certutil -enterprise -addstore NTAuth NIH-DEVICE-SUBCA2-SHA1.cer
     certutil -enterprise -addstore NTAuth HHS-FPKI-Intermediate-CA-E1.cer
     certutil -enterprise -addstore NTAuth HHS-SSP-CA-B7.cer
